Tenebrae Service

A Tenebrae service is a Christian liturgy traditionally held during Holy Week. The name Tenebrae comes from the Latin word for “darkness” or “shadows.” The service is structured to dramatize the growing darkness surrounding the suffering and death of Jesus.

Theological Purpose

The service is designed to help worshippers enter emotionally and spiritually into the Passion story. Rather than celebrating resurrection, it allows the church to dwell in the darkness and grief of Christ’s suffering before the joy of Easter.

In Episcopal Practice

In many congregations of the Episcopal Church, Tenebrae is often structured as “A Service of Light and Darkness” on Good Friday evening, combining scripture, music (often choral settings of the Passion), and the gradual darkening of the church.
