The Rev. Susan Haynes

Mother Susan began her ministry at St. Paul's on September 1, 2008. Ordained to the Priesthood in 2005, she served first as Associate Pastor at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. James in South Bend, Indiana and then as Priest-in-Charge. Mtr. Susan completed her theological education with a Master of Divinity Degree from the Vanderbilt Divinity School of Vanderbilt University, along with coursework in Anglican Formation from the School of Theology of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee and also in local formation through the Northern Indiana School of Theology. In addition to her theological studies, she holds a Master of Arts in Voice Performance from Middle Tennessee State University and a Bachelor of Arts in French and Music from the University of the South in Sewanee, TN. Prior to entering the ordained ministry, Mtr. Susan worked in both the counseling and educational fields.

In parish ministry, Mtr. Susan believes that God calls particular people into community for the purposes of accomplishing His work in that community. In order to realize one's vocation, Mtr. Susan and the leadership of St. Paul's encourage individual parishioners to do what they love to do, and in that way, they will be able to realize God's vocation for them. Mtr. Susan is particularly interested in empowering lay leadership within the congregation. For example, she established the Order of Lay Preachers, a group of lay persons who have gifts and vocations for preaching. Members of this order occasionally preach at worship.

In addition to her work at the parish level, Mtr. Susan also serves in various capacities in the wider church, at the Diocesan and International levels. She has served or is currently serving as Co-Dean of the Central Deanery, Secretary of the Standing Committee, Member of the Commission on Ministry, Member of Diocesan Council, Chair of the Ethics Committee, Diocesan Liaison to the Board of St. Margaret's House, Chair of the Deputation to General Convention, and Secretary on the General Convention's Committee on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse. She is a nationally certified church development trainer (CDI).

Mtr. Susan grew up in the South where she married her high school sweetheart, Fr. Thomas Haynes, also an Episcopal Priest, who is the Rector at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Plymouth, Indiana. Mtr. Susan and Fr. Tom have two children, Sarah and Avery.
